A bright and sunny day made for a perfect setting to celebrate the 69th Indian Independence Day on Saturday August 15th, 2015. Telugu Association of Metro Atlanta(TAMA) celebrated India’s independence day with great joy and gusto hosting around 1200 in the audience at the Skyland Business center in Cumming, Georgia.

The program kicked off with Kids Fest with kids of all ages(from elementary to high school) participating in fun, entertaining and also educational activities like indoor running races, sack races, lemon and spoon, treasure hunt as well as drawing at elementary school level , essay writing at middle school level, public speaking at high school level and Quiz. The most important fact was that the theme for all these activities was based on the independence movement. The goal was to have our kids understand and appreciate Indian culture and the struggles of leaders to achieve India’s independence. It was a great feeling to see the kids draw, write and talk and be inspired by them and their parents’ dedication to inculcate the values in them. The interest and enthusiasm shown by the kids was a sight to be seen as Anjali Chhabria from TV Asia was conducting the quiz. The kids also enjoyed fun activities like face painting, balloon animals and also had fun jumping on the inflatables.

A seminar on Fire Disaster Preparedness was conducted by American Red Cross which was an informative session and talked about the need and planning for such an eventuality as was experienced in the recent times in Atlanta. TAMA thanks Carisa Hettich, Preparedness and Partnership Manager from American Red Cross of Georgia for taking the time to spend a Saturday evening to educate the communicate and was felicitated with a plaque and shawl by past president Sri. Bala Indurthi and Smt. Madhavi Indurthi respectively.

The Emcees Swapna Katta and TAMA educational Secretary Venky Gadde kicked off the cultural programs all of which were based on patriotic themes with songs and performances of kids like Maa Telugu Talliki, Punya bhoomi naa desam, bharata mataku jejelu , desamunu preminchu manna and many more. Additional mention was a skit mostly from the Board and EC members about the independence movement.

The Consul General of India in Atlanta, Sri Nagesh Singh hoisted the Indian national flag and TAMA was appreciative of his presence as he had more than eight events to attend on the day. Special thanks to the audience for the participation as the Consul general mentioned that this was the best attended event that he has attended that day.

TAMA is also happy to have Tollywood hero Varun Sandesh whose family has recently moved to Atlanta. Despite his busy schedule, he was able to make it to the event, mingle with the audience and also entertained the crowd by interacting with them doing a movie related quiz.

One more guest in attendance was Mr. Adhik Kadam from India who has been working tirelessly with the non-profit organization Borderless World Foundation that works with thousands of affected children from Jammu and Kashmir. Mr. Kadam talked about their activities and also how we can help the kids.

Smt. Jyothi Chintalapudi presented information about Jayaho Kuchipudi to the audience.

TAMA Education Secretary Venky Gadde gave out information about the upcoming Manabadi classes starting from Sep 12th for the 2015-2016 school year.
